Drug Addiction Counseling

Drug Addiction CounselingDrug addiction counseling strives to address addiction as well as the co-existing issues related to family, relationships, employment, education, spirituality, physical health, mental health and legal concerns. The primary goal of drug addiction counseling is to develop a desired treatment outcome and strategies for achieving them. A variety of techniques are tailored to assist the individual in achieving and maintaining abstinence from drugs as well as help to repair the damage that addiction has caused in their life.

Drug addiction counseling is appropriate for children, adolescents and adults who are addicted or who are affected by another person’s addiction. Treatment may consist of individual or group counseling sessions in one or more sessions in a week. Drug addiction counseling can take place by itself on an outpatient basis or as part of inpatient rehabilitation, hospitalization or residential rehabilitation program. Drug addiction counseling done by itself on an outpatient basis is a popular form of treatment because of it's flexibility especially for those who cannot take long periods of time to devote entirely to treatment. These types of programs can be very useful to those who must continue to work or attend school. It is important to note that attending drug addiction counseling on an outpatient basis is different from inpatient treatment in that you are not under constant supervision, you still live at home and it requires strict self discipline. For those who fear they may give in to the temptation of drugs or alcohol in the early stages of recovery, inpatient residential treatment at a drug and alcohol rehab center is recommended.

Drug addiction counseling sessions are used for assessment, education, discussion about the addiction, planning strategies, support, evaluation of progress, recommendations and referrals. The length of treatment depends on many factors including the severity of addiction, length of addiction, the specific substance of abuse, the client’s stage of readiness, environmental influence and co-existing complications. In drug addiction counseling, it is the individual who must take responsibility for working on and succeeding with a program of drug recovery.
